Coffee Traditions Around the World Event: Damascus Around the Coffee Table

Join us Saturday, September 27th, 2025 at 7PM for Epoch Chemistry’s After Hours Event Series explores coffee’s cultural roots across the globe. Our first evening, Damascus Around the Coffee Table, is led by Janette Akel, who will guide guests through the rich traditions of Syrian, Turkish, and Persian coffee.

In this demonstration, Janette will guide us through the cultural significance of Damascus coffee (some with a hands-on experience), exploring its unique history, traditions, and preparation methods. Unlike other regions in Syria and the Middle East, Damascus has preserved a distinct coffee culture that reflects the city’s identity, hospitality, and storytelling spirit. Through this journey, she will show how coffee in Damascus is not just brewed, but lived.

Damasians played a huge role in sharing coffee cultures and recipes during its trade along the silk trail, making this a perfect first stop for our education on coffee around the world.

Janette Akel is a native of Damascus with a deep love for coffee and its role as a universal language of connection. For her, coffee is more than a drink—it is a shared ritual that bridges cultures and generations.
